SEN Tutor

New Yesterday

Job Description

Are you an educator who looks beyond behaviour and sees the young person underneath?
Do you recognise that real progress is sometimes measured in trust, resilience, and small but meaningful breakthroughs rather than grades alone?

We are seeking committed, experienced tutors in the Thurrock area who want their work to have genuine purpose not just fill a timetable.

The Opportunity

The majority of our referrals involve secondary-aged pupils with SEMH and complex profiles. Many of these students have struggled within mainstream settings and require consistent, calm, and highly skilled support to help them reconnect with learning.

This is not a role where you simply deliver pre-prepared work and move on.

It involves:

  • Developing strong, professional relationships

  • Establishing structured and emotionally safe learning environments

  • Supporting both academic engagement and emotional regulation

  • Providing dependable, consistent presence week after week

Availability Requirements
  • Minimum 1015 hours per week

  • Sessions generally delivered between 8:30am and 3:30pm

  • Monday to Friday availability essential

Reliability is crucial. These pupils and the wider professional team rely heavily on consistency and routine.

Responsibilities Beyond Teaching

Our tutors are not only educators; they are key contributors to a wider support network.

You will be expected to:

  • Record attendance accurately

  • Track and document academic progress and engagement

  • Provide structured updates to be shared with schools and professionals

  • Maintain clear, professional documentation at all times

Your reporting may contribute directly to EHCP reviews, school planning, and multi-agency decision-making. Precision and professionalism are essential.

Suitable Backgrounds

Applicants may have experience in:

  • Tuition settings

  • Mainstream or specialist secondary schools

  • Alternative provision

  • Youth work or pastoral support roles

We are particularly looking for individuals who demonstrate:

  • Confident behaviour management grounded in empathy

  • Experience supporting SEMH or complex needs

  • Strong professional communication skills

  • Emotional resilience and reliability

  • The ability to work independently across varied settings

Understanding What Progress Really Looks Like

For some students, success may be academic achievement.

For others, progress might mean:

  • Remaining engaged for an entire session

  • Completing work without escalation

  • Beginning to rebuild trust in adults and education

If you understand and value these milestones, this role will resonate with you.

Why Work With Us?
  • Purpose-driven, meaningful work

  • Consistent daytime hours

  • The chance to positively influence a young persons educational journey

  • Ongoing professional communication within a supportive network

This is tutoring with responsibility, structure, and lasting impact.

If you are based in Thurrock and able to commit to consistent weekday hours, we would be pleased to hear from you.
